Behavioral Health Treatment Services-Updates to Upcoming Transition to Medi-Cal
A few years ago the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) received federal approval to provide Behavioral Health Treatment (BHT) services as a Medi-Cal benefit for individuals under the age of 21 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Therefore, responsibility for funding of these services transitioned from Regional Centers to Medi-Cal over the course of several months in 2016. Subsequently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) determined that Medi-Cal must cover medically necessary BHT services for all individuals under the age 21, regardless of diagnosis. As a result, the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and DHCS are developing a plan to transition funding for these services to Medi-Cal.
The transition date will be different for certain Regional Centers. ELARC is expected to transition in September of this year. View the transition schedule here. ELARC has been working diligently over the last few months compiling lists of consumers who will be affected by this change.
